Oesophageal Laboratory Studies

The studies are considered painless but lignocaine spray is used to num the nose and back of throat.

Stop eating and drinking three hours before the test begins.

The time required for each appointment is 1½ hours and the pH equipment is returned the next day.

Oesophageal Manometry

The study gives information on the strength, position and coordination of muscles, presence of hiatal herniation and disorders of oesophageal motility such as spasm.

A soft plastic tube, the manometry catheter, is passed gently into the nose and swallowed easily into the oesophagus.  It is attached to a computer and slowly withdrawn. A detailed map is analysed for abnormal muscle activity.

Ambulatory pH Monitoring

Measuring the presence of acid in the oesophagus shows the pattern and severity fo reflux and relates this to symptoms of heartburn, chest pain, coughing or choking attacks and regurgitation.

A soft plastic wire, the pH probe, is passed gently into the nose and swallowed easily into the oesophagus. It is secured by tape to the nose, cheek and over the back of the ear and plugged into a small portable computer.

You go home and have the pH probe in place for a period of up to 24 hours.
During the study you may eat, drink and sleep quite normally until your return the next day.

Drugs such as Nexium Pariet Losec Somac Zantac Zoton Pepcidine Zantac Amfamox Tagamet Acimax and Tazac must be stopped three days prior to the appointment. However, you may take antacid drugs such as Gaviscon Mylanta or Quick-Eze. Continue all other medication as prescribed.

Oesophageal function studies are expensive in terms of equipment, laboratory time and expertise. We therefore charge $380 for both manometry and pH studies.

Payment is required on the day and a receipt issued for your refund from Medicare.
Cancellation within 48 hours of appointment will incur a $100 charge.

Please Bring all barium swallow or barium meal x-rays with you.
